Hawaiian Parties
Hawaiian parties, like any other form of Hawaiian entertainment, vary greatly. On the one hand, there are Hawaiian luaus made for tourists. These can be a lot of fun, If not all that authentic. There is a lot of variation between them. Some Hawaiian luaus are basically a chance to eat food on the beach surrounded by tiki torches and nothing else. Others are real authentic Hawaiian parties. They feature dancers, Hawaiian Slack Key guitar, and sometimes even magicians. The Hawaiian party you choose will determine how much fun you have. Make sure to read a few tourist guides before choosing a destination. Of course, if you can get invited to authentic Hawaiian parties, you should go by all means. As nice as the luaus can be at hotels, true Hawaiian parties are even more fun. They are held on the coast of the ocean in remote locations, separated from outsiders. They are private parties, so you can't simply go and stumble upon one and pay admission. You have to know someone who will invite you before you can go. Of course, Hawaiian themed parties are always an option too. Even if you can't actually take a trip to Hawaii, you can still hold a Hawaiian birthday party. All you need is pineapple cake, fruit punch, tiki torches – assuming the kids are not too young – grass skirts, leis, and the right music. You can probably pick up a CD of slack key guitar in your local record store if you look for it. The very best Hawaiian party I ever want to was held about a year ago. I was with a girl I had just met – a native of the island. She had grown up there, and she knew the local culture very well. There are few places I have been to where it is more essential to have a local to show you around than Hawaii. The tourist beaches are great, but it is the really deserted isolated stretches of land that are the treasure troves. This particular party was held on the edge of a cliff above the ocean. Supposedly, it had been a sacred spot for Hawaiian shamans, and you can still see blackened stone from the sacrificial fires. People did traditional Hawaiian dancing, cooked Kahlúa pork – a delicious dish – and even played Hawaiian music. We stayed up all night, and when the morning came we watched the sun rise over the ocean.
