Las year was the first time I went to a resort and spa, and I was a little bit overwhelmed. You see, I had never done anything like that before. I have taken some extravagant vacations, but it is a different type of extravagance. For me, the ultimate thrill is getting away from it all. I am not accustomed to being waited on hand and foot, or to having luxury and comfort at my door. The only hot springs I have been to before were wild hot springs, several days hike from civilization. Going to a hotel spa resort was all new, and it made me nervous.
Nonetheless, when I got involved with my girlfriend, we agreed to make certain compromises. You see, although somehow we work out perfectly together, we are very different people. In most of our tastes, we are like night and day. I am the rugged outdoors type, and she is the cultured, urban cosmopolitan. My idea of a night out is playing music around a campfire, hers is going to an opera. Since I chose last vacation, it was her turn now. A resort and spa was, she said, just what she needed to unwind. Who was I to disagree? Apparently, she knew all about resorts and spas. Her parents were rather wealthy, and although they did not tend to spend a lot of money on extravagances at their home, they sure did go on a lot of luxury vacations. She had been on luxury ocean liner cruises, stayed in castles in Ireland and Scotland, and all in all, had lived it up all over the world before she was even 20! By her family standards, this resort and spa trip was nothing – just the typical vacation. By my standards, however, it was a completely new experience. I have to say that I enjoyed the resort and spa a lot more than I had expected to. After a few days, it was pretty easy to get used to being waited on! I would get massages every day, soak in the hot tub, take mineral baths, and in general enjoy a life of luxury and idleness. I can see why some people do this on every vacation!The point of vacation, after all, is to relax. I sure couldn't think of a better way to relax than getting massages, looking out at the ocean, and soaking in the sauna. I certainly will go again!
